After yesterday’s duplication disaster, the first booster of March proved to be a little better copies of Mortify, Eyes Everywhere, and Chillbringer. Whilst the duplicate commons and uncommons were good, I’m predictably going to talk about the new rare card I picked up:

Electrodominance is an X Generic ManaRedRed instant with a single ability; it does X damage to any target and then you may cast a card with CMC <= X from your hand without paying it’s cost.

This card is bonkers. The damage to any target part is effectively a Banefire at instant speed without the preventable clause. I love that it is specifically any target1 and whilst there are a ton of spells that can do the same for less2 this part is really just the cherry on top; the main bulk of the card is in that second sentence.

Being able to cast a card without paying it’s cost3 is good but the critical thing here is that Electrodominance is an instant; you can cast it on your opponent’s turn to bring in sorceries and permanents which shouldn’t be able to appear at this stage (although not lands; those are not “cast”). That means you can flash in a Niv-Mizzet, Parun or cast Cleansing Nova during your opponent’s combat phase. Also note that you can cast any card with CMC <= X from your hand so you could cast things you don’t have the right coloured mana for; you could sneak Teferi, Hero of Dominaria4 into your mono-red deck…

If the idea of zapping an opponent’s creature for X damage and then flashing in a Carnage Tyrant isn’t enough, have a think about the ways you can duplicate this spell: Doublecast, League Guildmage, Naru Meha, Master Wizard, Primal Amulet // Primal Wellspring, Thousand-Year Storm, The Mirari Conjecture, the list goes on and on.

In some ways I wonder if this should have been a split-card; maybe “Electrocute” for the damage to a target and “Elementary” for the cast a card section. As it is, we get to do both in one easily castable card. If you have Red in your deck, you probably want to put at least one of these in…

  1. So that could be a creature, planeswalker, or player. Some cards only target creatures and players *cough* Repeating Barrage *cough* ↩︎

  2. Here’s looking at you Shock, Lightning Strike, Precision Bolt, and friends. ↩︎

  3. Well, you’re actually paying the cost of the card plus RedRed but throwing some damage in as a freebie but you know what I mean. ↩︎

  4. Although planeswalker loyalty abilities can only be cast at the same time as sorceries so you wouldn’t be able to activate him if you flashed him onto the battlefield. ↩︎
