Alas, no planeswalker card today and my rare card was one I’d already opened a few days ago (Plaza of Harmony - moderate for a Gates deck, not much use to anyone else) so today I’m going to take a look at an uncommon split card:
Look at the top five cards of your library; reveal a creature card, put it in your hand, and stick the rest on the bottom of your library. There are several cards1 currently that have similar effects to this but this is the first to specifically let you find a “creature” rather than other specific types, lands, or colours. Naturally this is going to slide in well with a Gruul creature deck but it could also see play in a mono-blue deck that has few creature spells. That deck would likely prefer this to have been “Creature or land card” and pay an extra for the privilege but as it stands I can see this getting some good play.
Exile target creature but that creature’s controller gets to create a 3/3 green frog lizard token. My initial thought ran to casting this on one of your own creatures that is dying (note the instant speed) to get a fake afterlife effect or to trade up from a 1/1 token; the rate of return wouldn’t be bad (a 3/3 flash for 3 mana) and it’s also attached to Incubation so you can have this more as an insurance policy. That said, “frog lizard” isn’t a synergistic type2 so it loses points there. Casting it on an opponent is not as strong though as even if you are getting rid of a big creature you are leaving them with a 3/3 rather than negating the threat entirely. This is a rare example of having access to removal beyond things like Plummet and (to a certain extent) Titanic Brawl but I can’t help thinking if you are going to spend on “sort of removal” you’d be better off just paying for Essence Scatter and deal with the problem once and for all!
Others include Commune with Dinosaurs for finding dinosaurs or land, The Antiquities War for artifacts, Board the Weatherlight for historic cards, and Ajani’s Influence for white cards. Commune with Dinosaurs is the nearest sibling as it is the only other card with this “look at the top five cards” ability for just 1 CMC. ↩︎
i.e. there isn’t a card to give all lizards or frogs +1/+1 in the same way as there are for vampires (Legion Lieutenant), pirates (Admiral Beckett Brass), merfolk (Merfolk Mistbinder), etc. There are only 9 cards of type “frog” or “lizard” in Standard currently (of which 7 were released in this Ravnica cycle) so it seems unlikely they’ll be getting their own +1/+1 any time soon 😂 ↩︎
This post is part of a weekday series where I open up a booster pack and pick a card to discuss. Whilst these are often the best cards from the set, I'll often pick one that is a bit niche or one that has cool artwork or flavour text. If there's a particular card you want me to take a look at, get in touch or join my Discord community.
